The Mount Batur sunrise trek is one of the most booked tours in Bali, and it’s easy to see why. You start climbing in the dark, reach the top of an active volcano around 6am, and watch the sun come up over Lake Batur. On a clear morning you can see Mount Rinjani on Lombok across the water.
The catch is the timing. Pickup is between 1:30 and 2:30am, and the last part of the climb is steep. If that sounds miserable, there’s a jeep tour that gets you most of the view with none of the walking.
Prices and availability change by date, so if your dates are set it’s worth checking yours before you plan the rest of the week around it.

How much does the Mount Batur trek cost?
A guided sunrise trek with hotel pickup starts at about US$21 per person on Klook (checked October 2026). The price covers your guide, a simple breakfast at the top and a stop at a coffee plantation on the way back.
It goes up if you want a private group or add extras (more on those below).
The tour has a 4.7 rating from more than 5,000 reviews and over 60,000 bookings, and guides are available in English.
Is it cheaper to climb Mount Batur without a tour?
Usually not, especially if there are only one or two of you. You can’t just walk up on your own. Hikers have to use a local guide from the trailhead, and the costs add up:
| Going on your own | Approx. cost |
|---|---|
| Entrance permit | IDR 100,000 per person (about US$6) |
| Local guide | IDR 300,000 to 600,000 per group (about US$18 to 36) |
| Transport at 2am | Arrange your own driver |
| Breakfast | Bring your own |
A tour from about US$21 covers the pickup, guide and breakfast in one booking, and you don’t have to find a driver willing to leave at 2am. Going independently only starts to make sense for bigger groups who already have a driver.
Which package should you choose?
The trek on Klook comes in three versions:
- Join-in with round-trip transfer: you share the guide and van with other travellers. Cheapest, and fine if you’re solo.
- Join-in, meet at the meeting point: no pickup. Only worth it if you’re already staying near Kintamani.
- Private with round-trip transfer: just your group. Better for couples and families who want to set their own pace.
You can add a hot spring, a rice terrace and waterfall stop, a café in Kintamani, rafting, an ATV ride or a photographer. If you only add one, make it the hot spring. You’ll have been awake since 1am by the time you get there. The photographer is worth it if you care about the pictures, because you’ll spend sunrise taking photos of each other otherwise.

How hard is the climb?
Moderate, but don’t underestimate it. Most groups take about 2 hours to reach the top, gaining around 500 m. The first hour is a steady uphill path. Near the summit it turns into loose volcanic gravel, and you’ll use your hands in a few spots.
The guide walks at the group’s pace, so nobody gets left behind. If stairs leave you out of breath at home, though, this will feel hard.
What time do you get back?
Here’s roughly how the morning goes:
| Time | What happens |
|---|---|
| 1:30 to 2:30am | Hotel pickup |
| Around 4am | Start hiking with your guide |
| Around 6am | Summit, breakfast and sunrise |
| Around 7:30am | Walk down a different trail |
| Late morning | Coffee plantation, then back to your hotel |
Door to door it’s 8 to 12 hours, depending on where you’re staying and which extras you pick. Leave the afternoon free. You will want a nap.
Should you do the jeep tour instead?
If you’re travelling with kids or older parents, or you just don’t want to climb a volcano at 4am, yes. A 4WD drives you up to a viewpoint over the black lava fields and you watch the sunrise from there. You won’t stand on the summit, but you’ll still get the view.
The most popular jeep tour on Klook has a 4.9 rating from over 15,000 reviews. It’s a private group with pickup from Kuta, Ubud or Canggu, and it’s listed from about US$12 per person. That starting price depends on the package and group size, so check what’s included before you pay. The photographer package includes four edited photos and one edited video, which is the easiest way to come home with good pictures of yourselves.

When is the best time to go?
Go in the dry season if you can, roughly April to October. In the wet months cloud often sits on the summit and you may not see the sunrise at all.
Whatever month you’re there, book it for early in your trip. If it’s cloudy, you’ll still have days left to try again.
What to wear and bring
Wear trainers or hiking shoes with decent grip. Sandals are a bad idea on the gravel. Long pants help too.
It’s genuinely cold at the top before sunrise, so bring a hoodie or a light jacket even if it’s 30°C at your hotel. Ask whether your tour provides a torch. Klook also suggests sunglasses, sunscreen and a change of clothes. Bring a little cash for snacks, toilets and a tip for your guide.
How to book
Pick your date and package on Klook, then enter your hotel’s name and address at checkout. If you’re in a villa or an Airbnb, add a Google Maps link as well, since drivers pick up in the dark and villas can be hard to find.
The operator confirms your pickup time the day before, usually on WhatsApp, so install it before you fly. If you haven’t heard anything by the evening before, message them through the Klook app.
If you’re travelling in the dry season, book once your dates are fixed rather than leaving it to the last few days.

Quick questions
How hard is the Mount Batur sunrise trek?
It's moderate. Expect about 2 hours of climbing and roughly 500 m of elevation gain, ending on loose volcanic gravel. You don't need hiking experience, but you'll want reasonable fitness and shoes with grip.
What time does the Mount Batur tour pick you up?
Usually somewhere between 1:30am and 2:30am, depending on where you're staying. The operator sends the exact time the day before, normally on WhatsApp.
Can you climb Mount Batur without a tour?
You can skip the tour company, but you'll still need to hire a local guide at the trailhead and get yourself there at 2am. For a first visit, a tour with hotel pickup is the easier option.
Is the jeep tour better than hiking?
It's easier, not better. The jeep takes you to a sunrise viewpoint over the lava fields, so you skip the climb and the summit.
Is it cheaper to climb Mount Batur without a guide?
You can't skip the guide. On your own you pay a permit of about IDR 100,000 per person plus IDR 300,000 to 600,000 per group for a local guide, then arrange transport. For one or two people a tour from about US$21 is usually cheaper and easier.
What should I wear for Mount Batur?
Trainers or hiking shoes with grip, long pants and something warm. The top is cold and windy before sunrise even when the coast is hot.
